An Iconostasis Shrine

The Inspiration Behind “Iconostasis”
An Iconostasis shrine is a portable religious altar, and my Greek grandmother had one that mesmerized me as a child. This fascination with her shrine, combined with my captivation with the icons of the Greek church, nourished me both spiritually and artistically. These early recollections inspired me to build my own Iconostasis—a piece deeply rooted in faith, creativity, and cultural tradition.
Layers of Meaning in the Design
Each element in an Iconostasis shrine carries symbolic and spiritual significance. The deep blue resin represents windows to the spiritual realm, while blood-red epoxy resin dripping onto the central altar reflects my profound connection to faith. Drawing inspiration from a Greek beekeeper who places icons in his hives, I incorporated bees’ combs around the Christ figure. The bees, in their natural behavior, avoid the sacred images as they build their combs. Similarly, I left Christ’s face and sacred heart visible, portraying the bees at work with meticulous detail.
To enhance the spiritual atmosphere, I used LEDs to illuminate the Christ figure with a red ethereal glow, while white light shines from behind the windows, symbolizing divine presence. Through ongoing experimentation, I blended these elements to create a piece that seeks to capture the transcendent.
Art as Meditation
Creating an Iconostasis shrine is more than an artistic endeavor—it is a meditative act. As I work, I feel deeply connected to the world around me and to my own spiritual beliefs. This process drives my art, allowing me to craft works that are not only visually captivating but also spiritually resonant. Each layer of the assemblage becomes a reflection of my experiences and faith, inviting me to engage in a profound spiritual dialogue.
A Journey of Faith and Creativity
Creating an Iconostasis shrine signifies a pivotal moment in my spiritual journey. As I craft each component, I feel a profound sense of purpose, knowing I am weaving my faith and creativity into a unified whole. This sacred process deepens my spiritual understanding while offering a tangible expression of my beliefs. It is my hope that the Iconostasis opens a space for others to explore their own connections to faith and spirituality.
Objects as Vessels for Spiritual Connection
Each component of an Iconostasis shrine serves as both a vessel and a medium for spiritual connection. The bees’ combs and luminous LEDs are not mere decorations—they carry narratives that resonate with my personal journey of faith. Like an altar holding offerings, my assemblage invites viewers to reflect on their own spiritual paths. These objects, once ordinary, are transformed into powerful channels for spiritual expression.
Encouraging Altars of Meaning
Through creating an Iconostasis shrine, I aim to inspire others to create their own altars of meaning. The Iconostasis is a reminder that faith can be rediscovered through creative expression. Each element tells a story, and these stories shape us, turning everyday materials into sacred vessels. I am mindful of the ways this piece communicates the significance of finding personal meaning in objects, encouraging others to explore their own faith through the transformative power of art.
