Gel printing plates let me enter and enjoy the present moment. I get to make choices and I get to create something that satisfies me when using this simple printmaking tool. I use the creations I make inside my collages. I use found objects, paint, drawings and whatever I get my hands on to create my art. Thinking about what to use in my gelli plate art lets me think less about the garbage that can flood my mind. I am making choices and in “Right Now” and I am aware of only what is right in front of me.
I attended a gelli plate workshop. People of many different art making skill levels attended. The gelli plate was the great equalizer. It didn’t matter whether you could draw or paint. It didn’t matter if you were a long-time art maker or if you were brand new at exploring your creative side. Each person made something beautiful with their gelli plate and it was uniquely them. I am not great artist. I am just a person who has a creative side: just like everybody else. I have refined the way I express myself though the simple act of art making and through the simple act of being in the present moment as I am creating. I have found that the gelli plate is a wonderful tool for helping me refine my personal expression.
The simple shapes, colors and designs made with this print making tool allow me to express myself without fear of failing. I can relax and be in a peaceful flow. I can be mindful of my choices and enjoy the present moment. The gelli plates is liberating for me because there is truly no right or wrong when I use this simple printmaking tool. It’s my mindfulness painting tool that lets me pay attention to the beauty in my own choices and the beauty in how I express myself.
