Art Continues the Conversation
Written by: mindfulnesspaintings
I recently enjoyed the truth that art continues the conversation. A group of my teenage son’s friends recently came over. A few of them approached me to ask me about my work. These weren’t kids that were particularly interested in art, but my work piqued their curiosity. A little nervous, one of the boys said, “I just don’t understand why you paint this way. I’d like to know more about why.” He looked afraid that I would be mad. Personally, I was thrilled. I got a bunch of teenagers to notice art and ask some questions. My work made them curious. It made them think about the purposes for making art. Being in my home, and seeing me create, made them brave enough to approach me. We had an exciting conversation about my work. I shared my joy in creative process. I suggested that art can serve all different purposes and that it’s OK if it’s not all the same: that makes it provocative and interesting for the viewer. I talked about how the conversation we were having was a big reason why I create. I told them how important it is to me that art sparks dialogue and opens us up to new possibilities. This is the type of invitation I am seeking to offer the viewer through my paintings.
This recent painting is a continuation of this conversation. People are asking questions. Why did you paint a door? Why do fish swim among the sunflowers? What exactly is that and why did you do it that way? These are all oddities that have started an new exchange about our experiences in the “Right Now.” How I paint my experience of time and space draws people in. It makes them wonder and prompts them to ask questions. Sharing this work is an opportunity to develop intimacy, close the distance between us, build connection, and bring comfort in these times of isolation and uncertainty. A little off, slightly strange, and unexpected choices on my canvas drive dialogue. I don’t paint it like others do. People want to know why. This makes space for the conversation. It’s the ultimate in inclusivity. No question is wrong. Anyone can ask why. I create with the hope that questions will be asked. I am passionate about sharing the answers. If you have a story to share with me, that’s even more exciting. For me, it’s not just about the art. It’s about the exchange. It is pure pleasure when my art continues the conversation.

What do you think of this door that leads to magical places? Tell me what you think. Ask me why the fish swim among sunflowers. Ask me why a water spigot is under the water. This piece of art is made to ignite and then continue a conversation.
